Developing the Elements Collection

THE ELEMENTS
The ancients believed the world to be composed of four basic elements:
Water – Earth – Air – Fire

These were considered the critical energy forces that sustained life. All of these elements are integral parts of matter or the physical universe, and the human body is a physical creation existing in the material realm. Maintaining a balance between these elements was advocated to ensure physical as well as psychological well-being.

We are surrounded by the four classical elements (air, earth, fire, and water) within our environment. They are represented by the wind in our skies, terra firma (the land upon which we walk), warmth from sun (along with the fire we create), and a wide variety of water resources (seas/oceans, rivers, lakes, creeks, and ponds).

Human ‘beings’ were seen to be made of and governed by the four elements. Maintaining a balance between these elements was advocated to ensure physical as well as psychological well-being.

Everything in the physical world was also observed to have a combination of four principal qualities – hot, cold, dry and moist.

  • cold and wet combined to produce Water
  • cold and dry gave Earth
  • hot and wet resulted in Air
  • a combination of hot and dry produced Fire

Additionally, these four elements combined to create Life, but only together with the quintessential fifth element, the life force, the ‘aether’ or ‘spirit’.

CONNECTING TO THE ELEMENTS
In developing this collection, we experimented with the concept of creating a series of candles to connect fragrances that would represent each elements function:

CANDLES AND THE POWER OF FRAGRANCE

Our most powerful sense is smell which is intrinsically linked with memory and emotion. Inhaling a fragrance can transport you to a place, remind you of a person and even create a marker in time.

The simple act of lighting a fragranced candle, with its gentle flicker and ambient glow, can allow you to connect with memories and feelings. The low light that comes from the candle is captured by your sight and sent straight to your brain for processing, the body begins to relax – helping how we feel emotionally and physically.
